This book is intense, it is beautiful and cruel, told through the voice of a young girl, a 15-year-old woman-child wandering a barren wasteland. In this stunning apocalyptic novel zombies have infested a fallen America. Haunted by her past and pursued by a killer, Temple is surrounded by death and danger. The writing is lush and gorgeous. Temple has never known a world without desolation, without monsters, without danger or the necessity of moving on.
It shouldn’t be but it is so inspirational to watch Temple cope with her guilt, the necessity of surviving, her thoughts and reflections on her circumstances, her loneliness and the people she meets. I love Temple. She is just this kind of girl you want to read about in an apocalyptic novel with a unique voice in a genre that has been overrun by wannabees. This is her story, full of violence and gore, brutal and savage. But it is also about the beauty that can be found in this wasteland life on Earth has become.
“God is a slick god. Temple knows. She knows because of all the crackerjack miracles still to be seen on this ruined globe.”
